Week 2_Jiaming Mai_ A02

Even though I am already a sophomore in college, the memory of the college application process is still fresh in my mind. As the article “ Beyond Tiger Mom Anxiety: Ethnic, Gender and Generational Differences in Asian American College Access and Choices” suggested, first-generation college students couldn’t depend entirely on their parents to guide them on their college pathways since their parents were not as familiar with the process. I strongly agree on it since I am also a first-generation student. My success in attending college is pretty much relying on the help of my school and teachers. Even today, I still feel very fortunate about going to college because I realized the social class is strongly inherited and getting a good higher education is the first and necessary step to jump out the trap. It is understandable why tiger mom anxiety was popular among the Asian American community because first generation immigrants have suffered a lot from being uneducated. The success of attending an elite university can eventually be the key to move into the next social class and create more social influence. Personally, I am a supporter of the tiger parenting style. Getting a higher education isn’t only for getting a diploma. It is a process of becoming a better and more intelligent individual. In fact, what makes us to be the "model minority" was mostly because we valued education and put expectations on our children.

Question: Why people support affirmative action? I think it is unfair to these hard-working students.
