In the article, Fight the Tower: A Call to Action for Women of Color in Academia, by Caroline Valverde, she explains the hardships she went through as a woman of color in an education system. As she talks about her Tenure journey, it was truly inspiring and eye-opening that people of color, especially women, have to go through so many difficulties to defeat the injustices in our society. As she faced many barriers just to remain in the academe, rather than giving up, or accepting the situation of inequality, she continued to fight the good fight and be a voice for others. Although I was aware of unfair treatment in the workforce, I did not expect it to be based so much on gender, and skin color. I was a bit confused as to why professor Valverde showed a ten minute clip on the pepper spray incident, but after reading this article I can see the correlation: the corruption of the education system is “the root of inequality.” As professor Valverde continues to fight for the equality of women of color in the academe, she demonstrates courage, and a willfulness to “fight the tower.”
Question: What is the most effective solution to stop the unequal treatment of people of color in the education system?
