Week 1 - Jessica Kim Garza A04

Fight the Tower: A Call to Action for Women of Color in Academia by Kieu-Linh Caroline Valverde exposes the multitude of obstacles that women of color face in a career of higher education. She does this through her own fight for tenure, against discrimination and personal hardships. Valverde explains, "Historical inequalities, marred by legacies of racism, sexism, and classism, continue to shape and define the context of the university today". The institution for higher education stems from the history of discrimination and bias which still shapes the universities today. She mentions the corporatization of universities to produce a system of profit and socially engineered population.

This week of reading through this article has made me angry. Fight the Tower: A Call to Action for Women of Color in Academia is an inspiring battle which calls for equity in academia and society.
The call to fight for a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive society in this weeks reading has inspired me to recognize these injustices and find resolve.

These are questions that I have...
How can we address these discriminations more openly in society?
What can we do to solve discriminations?
Would increased activism actually lead to change in policies that could protect women of color and other minorities?
