Week 9 - Jesse Huang

ASA 001
Jesse Huang week 9

In the article ,  "Why Ferguson Matters to Asian Americans" , Soya Jung tackles the question of racial equality and the amount of responsibility Asian Americans have to improving racial standings. Jung takes the Ferguson incident and analyzes each component that pertains to race. She highlights the fact that Asian Americans are often lost in where to stand on the race front. She provides an account of how emotions are a big factor in racial affairs and how they seep from systemic anger of racial institutions. This article felt like a continuation of last weeks readings where they talked about racial confrontation and movements. I agree with Jung that Asians cannot just sit these matters out and watch from the sidelines. However i feel that excessive emotional fueled protesting and forced agency will only lead to negative consequences. She explains that Chinese Americans and Japanese Americans reinforced and embraced the model minority concept, which apparently consequently fueled anti-blackness. Yet I feel that this is too far of an extreme to say that because the model minority stature was perpetuated, it would inevitably lead to anti-black feelings and was a primary contributor. I think personally that because Asians get so little representation in social affairs, they have no choice but to resort to measures that will protect themselves and their future generations. America is may be a free land on paper and through mouth, but the reality of the fact is that there is a underlying social hierarchy to this nation and it feeds upon the poor and only tolerates the middle class.

Question: Why are Asian Americans constantly forced out of the race equality movement and have little or no representation?
