Week 10: Noelani Pastor

Week 10

This weeks article was "The Time to Fight is Now: When Asian American Women in Academia Go Rougue" written by Kieu-Linh Caroline Valverde and Wei Ming Dariotis. In this article, the authors talk about their journey through the academic system and how demeaning it could be, specifically, for Asian American women. Reading about the struggles they encountered made me realize just how broken this system really is. We don't hear much about it through media and such because it may not be as big of deal to others compared to people from the Asian American community. In fact, I didn't know the severity of this issue and how harsh universities could actually be to people of certain race, gender, and color. The article mentions that Asian American women are typically at the bottom of the university hierarchy which seems absurd to me considering that everyone should be treated equally regardless of their race. In another aspect, this system is completely selfish. It's leaders do not care about the underlying feelings that workers may have, but they care about how successful the university is and how much money they are bringing in. Again, it's completely selfish. This brings me back to the first weeks readings as we read about Valverde's experience during her tenure battle which caused her distress. When tying it all together, we really can see that this system is completely broken and people are paying attention to it as much as they should.

Question: Why do officials and administrators look down upon Asian American women? Where does the problem root from?
