Week 10- Jesse Huang

Week 10 Section 001
Jesse Huang

In the article, “‘The Time to Fight is Now’: when Asian American Women in Academia Go Rogue” by Kieu-Linh Caroline Valverde and Wei Ming Dariotis, the authors center around the topic of mistreatment of Asian women in academia and the hardships they encounter on their journey through the academic lifestyle. The authors point out critical injustices and atrocities that happen to women in academia and criticize the system that perpetuates these actions. However, there is a call to action in the article for Asian women to rally up and stand together against the system of injustices and press forward for equality regardless of race or color. I was able to connect a lot of main key points from Week 1's reading of Professors Valverde's personal account of her fight for tenure to this Week 10's reading. The disproportionate amount of discrimination and mistreatment of women in academia insinuate a darker side to the underhanded structure and corporatization of education and work in general. If there is nobody to stand up to this unfair treatment, then higher ups will be allowed to run amok and will eventually permanently damage the infrastructure of education. Throughout this course, I was able to read many pieces that focused on mistreatment, racial warfare, academia, and cultural appropriation. Using all my knowledge that I accumulated, I began to see connections between certain topics and how ethnic studies were all intertwined with society and people on a interpersonal level. Before I took this class, it was very easy for me to glance over today's ethnic issues and not pay any attention. But as the blogs come to a close and with this final reading being finished, I feel as if I have been awoken to a whole new perspective on approaching ethnic studies and analyzing day to day life.

Question: Do you think that Asian women are more targeted than women of other race?
