Week 10- Thuong Nguyen, A01

After reading, "The Time to Fight Is Now”: When Asian American Women In Academia Go Rogue" by Kieu Linh Caroline Valverde and Wei Ming Dariotis, I was filled with lots of hope for the future of women of color in academia. The article spoke of resilience as well as resistance against the system through the Fight the Tower Movement. It offers women resources and support through their struggle against a oppressive system that discriminates against people of color. For me, it was hard to understand how unjust the system can be. This was before I read the story Ms. Wei Ming Dariotis, who was denied  promotion despite her merit. Furthermore her accomplishments were completely unacknowledged by the provost. I was outraged. Our system is truly broken. What can we do to begin to mend the pieces? The Fight the Power movement can only do so much for women faced against discrimination. The movement will be able to provide these women with resources and help, but these women will have to face their own personal struggles against academia head on. Fight the tower is a perfect first step, but only when it can grow into a nationally recognized issue, will it finally be fully recognized and resolved.

Question: Is it possible to make changes to the system without it growing into a nationally recognized issue?
