Week 10 - Arthur Orola

Arthur Orola
AO3

This week we examined '“The Time to Fight is Now”1: When Asian American Women in Academia Go Rogue' by our very own professor, Kieu-Linh Caroline Valverde and Wei Ming Dariotis. This piece has been culmination of all the the different sorts of concepts and ideas that we have learned throughout the quarter and gives it to us straight from the work of professor Valverde itself. I think it's crazy (for lack of a better word) that all the shortcomings of the administration and the sort of stress that it excerpts on its faculty can leave individuals with severe psychological and physical illnesses and in the case of Valverde's fight for tenure, leave them coma stricken, with miscarriage, and on the death bed. It's disgusting actually how the administration can fail in so many different ways and push individuals so close to the edge and again, these school administrations are often the ones that we think of as righteous and always act in the interest of its students, faculty, etc. but obviously is not the case. The sorts of challenges and battles that one has to face when going against the system are incredible and are 1000% more than meets the eye. For those who fight, countless hours of stress, lost sleep, etc. fighting for what is right, but if it wasn't for taking this class or giving this a read, I would never be aware of the sorts of injustices or systematic wrongdoings that are taking place in the very school I attend.

Question - As students, professors are there to aid and guide us. But what can we do as students to help our professors?
