Week 9: Solidarity Movements

I read "Why Ferguson Matters to Asian Americans" by Soya Jung and "Building a Culture of Solidarity: Racial Discourse, Black Lives Matter, and Indigenous Social Justice" by Santos F. Ramos. Both articles made a great point on the dichotomy that is Black/White in this country. Too often do we see the media portraying the dark vs the light in terms of race and displaces all other races/minorities from the discussion. In "Why Ferguson Matters to Asian Americans", Soya Jung describes the deeper impact that the Ferguson protests had on the racially discriminated communities as a whole and how Asian Americans fit in this narrative. She states that model minority and black criminality are both "mutually reenforcing" of the systemic violence derived from European imperialism and colonialism and that Asian Americans should not and must not stand silent in the face of systemic oppression.
In the second article "Building a Culture of Solidarity: Racial Discourse, Black Lives Matter, and Indigenous Social Justice, Santos F. Ramos describes the strategy of cultural rhetoric and how it integrates cultural accountability in the face of social research. He then proceeds to push forth a more positive message in "relational organizing", in order to manage a "culture of solidarity" to help people spread love and respect within communities.

Question: Do you believe a dichotomy other than White/Black is possible? How so?
