Week 10 - Angie Zhang

Angie Zhang
Section A01

After reading “‘The Time to Fight is Now’: When Asian American Women in Academia Go Rogue” by Professor Kieu-Linh Valverde and Wei Ming Dariotis, I feel a strong sense of hope. This article discusses the problem of how Asian American women in academia are struggling because of being placed at the bottom of the university hierarchy. Due to this, Asian American women in academia are an important part of shifting the function of universities. However, this is also incredibly difficult, as proven in the past, because white male professors see them as threats if they do not do what they are socially expected to do, which is to simply stay silent of such injustice. While reading this article, I personally found it very odd how Asian Americans are stereotypically deemed as highly intellectual as well as overachievers by society, but are still victims to such oppression in academia, such as the difficulty they face trying to obtain tenure. For example, this article states that 92% of white male professors are tenured while only 40% of Asian American women get tenured. I really do admire Professor Valverde’s courage, as well as other women such as Amy Block Joy, to stand up for what she believes in because there are honestly not a lot of women who would risk their career to speak up for such matters. Whether it be for the sake of their reputation or even their safety from retaliation, many women would just stay silent. Therefore, I do believe that more women in academia need to stand together and speak up for justice. Nothing is going to change if we simply stay silent. There is no “waiting it out” and everything will be fine. Thus, the time to fight is now and together, Asian American women can change the injustices they face in academia.

Question:
Why are some people so blind to Asian American women’s injustice in academia? What can be a way for men to support this issue? If this issue is publicized enough, will anything actually change?
