Week 2 - Wenru Shi - Section A01
The stereotype of Chinese/Asian Tiger Mom is deep-rooted in most Americans’ brains, including the white, black and other minorities. Sometimes even though it is students themselves who have good grades and get into elite schools, many people will unintentionally think their performances and choices are “determined” by their tiger mom. While what inside this question is not just about strict Asian parents, it is that other races want to find an excuse of such success of Asian students (model minority). According to the article “Beyond Tiger Mom Anxiety: Ethnic, Gender and Generational Differences in Asian American College Access and Choices ” written by OiYan Poon and Ajani Byrd, it concludes that “ethnicity, gender and college-going generation” influence Asian Americans a lot. More and more Asian Americans have high grades, go to elite schools nowadays, and do well in high education, some other races of people may feel fear and panic. Thus, they may find a reason to describe such a phenomenon by shaping a tiger mom. (while truly some of the parents are tiger moms)
Another interesting point is that one of the findings in this article is that “Women were more likely to name individuals other than themselves as important players in their college choice process.” The connection between gender and race could reveal Asian American women is less confident than Asian American males, and we could infer they are also less confident than white males and maybe white females. As KimberlĂ© Crenshaw said, this is an “intersectionality” problems, an intersection problem between sexism and racism.
Question:
After reading “The Untold History of Modern US Education”, I am wondering is now public education still in control of some titans (either economic or political)? The professor said in the class that universities are “corporationalized” nowadays, while how does it relate to “being controlled”?
