Section A01
Week 2
Growing up with both parent have a college degree and one, later on, got an MBA. I was told that getting a college degree is something I most do rather than a chose or a goal. In their mind, there is not a world that their children are without a college degree. Being somewhat a smarter one among is kids I was even told to go pursue a Ph.D. at some point. Well, this might work back in their days when schools are for education and education only. Fees are affordable and you have a job line up for you after. Now the world had changed. In "The Untold History of Morden U.S. Education", we see that schools are being founded by big corporations, it has been come impossible from school to exist without funding from the private sector even for state-funded schools.
In "Beyond Tiger Mom Anxiety" we see what factor influenced Asian kids' college chose. Personally, for me, it was also college reputation and family approval. Since my parents are foreign and the only school they know was UCB and Standford I had to explain a whole lot about UC school ranking and why Davis has a good program too before they are less worry.
Is it funny to hear the joke about a white mom talking to an Asian mom that her kid changed major from engineering to art history then the Asian mom said that the kid is going to be homeless in the future. This reflects how different group thinks about college chose and major and also the reality that colleges are too expensive.
Question: Should race/ethnicity be a factor in college admission?
