The topic of education came up to me when I was reading the
journal: Asian Americans and Affirmative
Action: From Yellow Peril to Model Minority and Back Again. Since intelligence
is human’s greatest strength, education signifies power in the society. While
education is important, not every person has the equal chance to receive a good
education. In America, Asian Americans have been the mascot in the system for a
long time. Although, generally Asian Americans outperform other races in the
subject, not all Asian Americans receive a good level education because of the discrimination
in the system. According to the journal, colleges have anti-discriminatory
policy which ironically prevent a certain group of people to be admitted, since
these schools must put a quota on each race. Coming from a non-Asian Americans,
I feel that the education system of the USA is the same as my country,
Indonesia. Perhaps the only difference is that wealthy people in my country
will go to the best schools in the country no matter how smart they are, unlike
in the USA where students from low-income family backgrounds still have the
chance to go to good schools if they are smart. It is the truth that no matter
where we live, social disparity will always exist even in the most developed
country in the world. The only thing that we can do now is to decrease this
disparity to its minimum. Even though racism in the education has been better
than ever, USA still has room for improvement if we look at other developed
countries.
Question: How can we improve the education system as a
student in a university?
