Week 1_Jiaming Mai_ A02

For this week's readings, I had an opportunity to learn the hidden power structure of our academic system through professor Valverde’s words. Unlike other students' reactions to the article "Fight the Tower: A Call to Action for Women of Color in Academia", I didn't feel shocked or unexpected about these discriminations happened in academia.  In fact, the practice of social engineering and manipulation exists everywhere in the U.S. The Silicon Valley and Wall Street was two obvious one.  Asian American barely got the opportunity to obtain an important managerial position. According to the data from The New Republic by Matt Schiavenza, Asians and Asian Americans comprised 27 percent of the workforce at Google, Intel, Yahoo, Hewlett Packard, and LinkedIn, but held just 13 percent of executive jobs. Our Asian Americans were like a group of hard-working bees; obeying orders and working.

Despite these unequal situations that we faced today, I was hopeful about the future of the Asian American community. We will have more room to speak for ourselves with a growing number of the Asian American population and more available supports from experienced mentors like professor Valverde.  That is why I think the theme of the week should be the word “wokeness.” The pepper spray video was there to educate us about the honored history of our students fighting for their rights.Overall, living in the United State as a minority is challenging. As a student, what I think we can do is to learn hard and use the knowledge we had to gain influences and reputation for the Asian American community.

Question: As a child of immigrants, I can't understand why some second-generation Asian Americans hate their own native countries.  Do American schools brainwash our kids by using curriculums?

  1. Exactly! Academia is just one institution affected by "social engineering" and injustice.
