This week's readings were very interesting to read about. I appreciate Caroline for sharing her story to inform people of what is really going on in the workplace towards people of color; it is truly inspiring to read about all the obstacles that she (shouldn't have) had to overcome to get to where she is today. As an Asian American woman, I do notice slight judgement on a day-to-day basis but I never really considered it as a racial or sexist thing until I read the article Fight the Tower: A Call to Action for Women of Color in Academia. I thought the "jealous, mean girl" behavior that Caroline's colleagues showed towards her was only present during middle school and high school. Apparently, this type of behavior only gets worse as you get older. It is very surprising and disappointing to me that there is a lack of support for Asian American women within the community. The article is proof that there are issues much bigger than just race and gender. Power also plays a big role in the workplace. The "powerful" or the ones on top, tend to forget about those below them. But with the efforts that Caroline herself, along with her friends and students, showed that power can come in many different forms. As an Asian American woman, I now realize that not everyone that is around me will want to see me succeed. As an Asian American woman, I now realize that I might have to work a little harder than everyone else. As an Asian American woman, I now realize that I need to believe in myself because not everyone will.
What will it take for others to support others?
