Before I took this class and read this article from Professor Valverde, I didn't think the race problem is so serious in the university, and happened frequently in today. After I read the "Fight the Tower: A Call to Action for Women of Color in Academia", I am shocked, because the race problem is described as "office politic" by professor Valverde. In the university, there is a place in which spreads the knowledge, explores the world and improves for the whole human evolution. However, because of race, gender, ethnicity and etc., the campus full filled with discriminations and it's hard to avoid and handle. In the tenure battle, Caroline lost an unborn kid, be isolated, and stay healthy. Just because her identity is Asian American, she continually be suffered from discrimination from the "academic bully culture". In fact, she knew what she will meet. As she said in the article " The ideas behind the struggle for equal rights, the recognition of historical discrimination, and the continued bias within institutions that prompted policy makers to introduce affirmative action, had already faded by the time I became a college student." Obviously, this is a historical problem pass to nowadays. As an international student, every time when my father ask me "what's your plan for future" I answered without doubt and say "I want to back to China." Because I am afraid, and I think I will know, in the future, if I have chance work in the US, I also seek into the same trouble and I don't have enough courage to fight with it. After read this, I totally understand why professor Valverde showed the video at the first class. She wanted to tell us "in the world, there are many discriminations. Fight for rights, equality and peace." Even though the process is hard and tough, many people are suffered by same reason of discrimination. Just as Caroline Valverde stood out fight that it is the best way to help ourselves as well as others in the world.
Question: From the start when human appeared in the Earth, why the kinds of discrimination can influence all aspects from live and why most of stereotypes are about discrimination?
