This week is the first week I start to learn Asian American Studies. I am so glad that I could read professor Dr. Valverde’s article “Fight the Tower: A Call to action for Women of Color in Academia” to judge and evaluate issues related Asian Americans. To be honest, I felt strongly depressed and distressing while reading this article. The reason is that from my cognition, the university is a place which demonstrates high moral standard and intellectual level that no discrimination and racism will occurs. However, the professor Dr. Valverde used her story to prove that the fact was inverse. Under the university’s educational system, the injustice phenomena that woman of color could be a cause of unfair treatment. After deeply thinking and reflecting, I just recognized I should not be surprised with this issue since discrimination against Asian Americans was not only occurred in academia area, but also in workplace and so on. Asian Americans always get higher difficulties to obtain a senior position compared with native Americans and others. Meanwhile, I have learnt some things through professor’s experience. If we face discrimination, we cannot run away from problems, instead, we should be positive enough to figure out solutions to eliminate others’ discrimination and strive for equality. Last but not least, I still have one question, to what extent America’s related departments or government could publish some policies to eliminate inequity towards Asian Americans?
