Sadaf Sadiq- Monday Section 3- Week 2

Sadaf Sadiq
Monday Section 3
Week 2 Readings

After reading week 2’s papers, I think the theme that popped up multiple times was Affirmative Action. As someone that has heard of Affirmative Action gaining attention recently, especially around Harvard University, I did not have a clear grasp of what it was. After reading this weeks papers, I got an understanding of how Affirmative Action affected people specifically like me. However, the same question I had about it continually popped up in the readings and was answered. What about the Asians, where do they fall in this ordeal? In Asian Americans and Affirmative Action: From Yellow Peril to Model Minority and Back Again, Nancy Chung Allred talks about Asian Americans not having a stable spot in the “black/white paradigm”. Affirmative Action is a two edged sword that has its ups and downs for Asian Americans like me. It sounds like it is introducing a fair opportunity for marginalized minorities and communities to level the playing field, but also pitting us against other minorities. For darker asians like myself, Affirmative Action can go a long way to propel us forward in areas that were closed off not too long ago. Affirmative Action sounds like it would help those who work hard to succeed and do better if it was dismantled, but it only sounds beneficial for Chinese Americans due to the paper’s research. Affirmative Action seems like a tool people can use to drift apart communities from each other and create prejudiced rifts.

Is Affirmative Action still in place at Universities currently?
