Week 2-Tao Zheng-A03

In the article, "Beyond Tiger Mom Anxiety: Ethnic, Gender and Generational Differences in Asian American College Access and Choice," OiYan Poon and Ajani Byrd challenges the stereotype of Asian American parents as Tiger mom and argues that other individuals and factors including “ethnicity, gender and college-going generation” also play important roles in the college application process. The stereotype of Asian Tiger moms and "rationalized other" of Asian Americans is assumed
in most Americans' minds because they think that most Asians are high-achieving due to their highly disciplinary parents. One interesting discovery of the research is that first-generation college-going students are "less likely to name a parent as most influential individual in their college choice process" (Poon, O., & Byrd, A, 2013) because their parents are less familiar with the college application process and have no experience. I relate to this discovery. In my experience, I applied to American college with the instruction of not the parents but High school counselors and teachers. Gender also plays an important role in the college application process. According to OiYan Poon and Ajani Byrd, "women were found to be more influenced by their interpersonal relationships in the college choice process than their male peers." Male students are more likely to name themselves as the most important influence in the decision making process.
I believe the deep-rooted stereotype of Tiger mom will be reduced once more research like OiYan Poon and Ajani Byrd's is conducted. One question I have for the reading is what social problems might this stereotype of Tiger mom cause in the society.
Hold on, tiger mom
