The
decline of public universities is a oft discussed subject. Many minority groups
face struggles in academia as a result of prejudice. In Fight the
Tower: A Call to Action for Women of Color in Academia Dr. Kieu-Linh
Caroline Valverde discusses her personal experiences in academia. She dubs the
current system "the tower" as it represents a monstrous undertaking
to fight to create real change in academia. I thought the paper itself was quite
interesting. First of all, it gave me more of a background about Dr. Valverde,
and I could better understand the experiences she went through. I was also able
to see why she has such a passion for educating and researching about Asian-Americans
in American society and their culture. In particular I was able to learn a
lot more about the struggles women of color face in academia, as was the focus
of the paper, and I appreciated the chronological flow of the paper, which
helped keep it easy to follow. It also brought into reality some of the barriers
I could possibly face in my career in graduate school, and this made the experiences
and lessons that much more memorable for me. One thing this paper did make me
wonder is, have universities always been like this, and there just was less
documentation and call-out of these practices, or have universities truly been
declining? Either way, the current trend of shunting fresh faces out of
academia is a bad trend to continue on, as many possible future researchers may
choose to instead leave academia instead of contributing their intelligence due
to barriers present.
