After reading the article Creating Identity, Defining Culture and Making History from an Art Exhibit, I was completely surprised about the Vietnamese communities response to the art work. They had a negative response to her piece and the artist even experienced cyperbullying. I understand that the artist was just expressing in an artistic way how her Aunt helped herself and family members through working in a nail shop. I can see on the other point of view why some community members can feel offended because it is a stereotype of Vietnamese ladies work in nail shops. All over youtube you can watch people making a mockery of ladies in the nail shop, but that is the case across the board for all minority groups. When I was taking an art history class I remember coming across many art pieces throughout all the time periods that were controversial. A community member mentioned that is was disrespectful to put a flag on a basin and I could agree with that as well because flags are considered very sacred to a country such as burning of stomping on one is taboo, but clearly the artist intentions were not bad but rather just an expression of herself through art.
