In Response to “Korean American Youth and
Transnational Flows of Popular Culture across the Pacific” article by Jung-Sun
Park
"Big Bang" - A K-pop vocal group. |
In this article, author Jung-Sun Park talks about
the increased popularity of Korean TV drama, music, and the Korean culture
influence globally. He also talks about how the Korean pop culture is
contributing to globalization. In some cities, Korean TV channels and radio
stations have been established. The increasing exposure to this ethnic media culture
is because of immediate availability via technologies such as the internet. The
article also talked about the idea of “model minority” but not all Asian
Americans fit into this blatantly wrong ideal.
I think the consumption of Korean pop culture is beneficial
as more and more people of different cultures get to know Korean pop culture.
This fuels globalization in this “White-dominated” society. As more and more
people get to know different cultures, maybe people will become more open to
change in the media here in the US, where Asian Americans are rarely seen. If
they are, then more often than not they are tokens.
I do wonder though, if Korean pop culture could have
such a huge influence and contributing to globalization, could other Asian
culture groups permeate this society as well?
