Title: “Love, Money, Prison, Sin, Revenge” by
Andrew Lam
Viet Cong |
I was shocked that four young Vietnamese guys robbed
Good Guys Store in Sacramento. I've been in America for a long time and never
heard of Asian guys robbing a big store like Good Guys. I agree with Lam about
how this robbery is similar to Vietnam War with all these helicopters hovering
over the store. Also this took place fifteen years after the Vietnam War ended.
I was stunned that the Nguyen brothers that robbed the store are quiet and
obedient kids. I don’t know how they became hostage-takers. I can feel the pain
their mom and dad went through. I can’t believe these boys threw away their
lives and tried to get helicopters to Thailand to kill Viet Cong. Even though
they want revenge from the Viet Cong for their suffering, robbing a store to
get it is not a right way to do it. These boys were also influenced by violence
in Hong Kong videos. I loved the way how Lam combined his personal experience
to this article. He relates his family experience to the Nguyen brothers. I
like the fact that he wants to teach other Vietnamese boys a lesson from the
death of Nguyen brothers.
Question:
1)
How did other Vietnamese react after this
robbery was shown live on TV? Should they be humiliated or just ignore this
whole thing?

“Intimate Partner Violence Among Asian
Immigrant” by Yeon-Shim Lee and Linda Hadeed
A Chinese Woman Abused by Her Husband |
Most of the Asian women are very shy. That’s why they
don’t report intimate partner violence. What we can do is to educate them to
report it to the police and do more studies about their cases. Many women in
Asia are oppressed by their men. Once they get to America, they can’t open up
usually because it is against their religion and cultures rules. This is a
great article about how women are humans like men and they need to be treated
with respect despite these cultural beliefs. Lee and Hadeed makes me want to
stand up and fight for women rights. No child deserves to see his/her father
regularly hitting his/her mother. IPV cause these women very bad depression. It
is very sad for a child to see his/her mother depressed every day. We must
educate these women to get help and leave the abusive relationships and leave
their religious beliefs.
Questions:
1)
We are now in America. Why did other women
ignored these Asian women that are going through intimate partner violence?
Women need to stand up for each other to get respect.
2)
Why are HIV/AIDS/STI cases low in Asian people?
