In response to “Deporting Our Souls and Defending Our Immigrants.”
Bill Ong Hing, in his article, “Deporting Our Souls and Defending Our Immigrants", discusses the tragic fates of many Asian American refugees and immigrants who have been dealt unjust blows by immigration laws; in his article, many of the deported are usually charged for crimes in which they have paid their dues for. The increasing number of crimes committed within the Asian American community with the number of non-citizens leads many officials to easily deport any of these people. Yet, people who are not non-citizens could potentially suffer the same fate. It is not as if these people are present in the States illegally as many are "either lawfully permanent resident aliens . . . or refugees legally admitted under U.S. refugee laws". Even minor offences may receive the deportation process. It is a shocking fact, but only recent years have presented a few revisions to the immigration and deportation process in criminal cases. However, one cannot argue that there may have been some racial profiling and motivation behind these provisions. These facts in history just begs the question: how well can the government fix these errors while creating non-racial discriminatory laws?
