At first glace of the undergraduate profile of Fall 2014, Asians are the largest minority group to make up 39% of the student population, while surpassing the whites as well. The publication of statistics like this only continue to fuel the racial stereotype of Asian Americans of being highly intellectual creatures that live and breathe academics—also known as the model minority. Asian Americans are believed to benefit financially in the long run because of the general belief of that Asians are obsessed with higher education.

As mentioned in lecture and discussion, the 1965 Immigration Act welcomed Asian immigrants and thus begin the idea of the model minority. A majority of the new immigrants that came to the United States after the passing of the legislation were of East Asian decent and a professional background with along side economic stability. It is these immigrants who can afford resources like tutoring to succeed academically which gave birth to the model minority stereotype. Stereotyping generalizes all Asian Americans erases the history of Southeast Asians who come from poorer countries as refugees.

Question: How can we present college statistics in a way that does not continue the notion of the model minority?
