Stop Being Model Minorities

In Grace Lee’s article, she said, people like Asian Americans “realize that the time had come for them to stop being model minorities and identify themselves as Asian Americans in order to expand and deepen the struggle against racism and imperialism.” This sentence reminds me of my friend Stephanie who is a Chinese American. I was born in China. I had no idea how is the feeling of living in United States with am Asian face until Stephanie told me. She said, Asian Americans always are considered as high intelligence like “good at math”, but unfortunately, she is not good at math. So when she was in high school, she always could hear words like “You are Chinese, why so bad at math?” which made her feel sad. She always wants to fire back to her classmates but she did not. Not like African Americans, Asian Americans are more likely considered as “model Minorities”, who are high-intelligent also so quiet to live in this country. They ignored or, I can say, accept any racism and imperialism around them. Like Stephanie, many Asian Americans now don't want to be model minorities anymore. They want to speak out loud that they are more than good at math; they, like Jeremy Lin, can be defined as more than simply “as Asian”. But is it time to stop being model minorities?
