In this week’s reading, "The Time to Fight is Now": When Asian American
Women in Academia Go Rogue, Professor Valverde discusses how Asian American women struggle in
academia and is failed by the system. This reading introduces all the stories
and struggles from a student to professors to faculties of academia. It shows
the differences depending on that person’s position in the institution. It brings
a wider view and a fuller picture of how women of color are treated or perceived
in the corporation of the university and the struggles the women had to deal
with and are faced with everyday.
I
found this reading interesting in the way it appeals to our generation now. The
part that stuck out to me was the references and the word play it had. It resembled
Star Wars. This, for me, added a bigger appeal in reading it and added a little
humor to the issue. The sense of humor in the writing can speak to future generations
in spreading the word of this concern or issue and become more effective. This reading
left me with an impression of possibly a better future for women of color in the
academic setting and setting the field for speaking up and fighting back for
our own rights.
Question:
If women of color, specifically Asian American, women don’t fit into the mold
society has placed on them, what is wrong with that?
