Week 10
The reading of this
week concludes everything we have learnt throughout the entire course. In ‘“The
Time to Fight is Now”1: When Asian American Women in Academia Go Rogue’, Professor
Kieu-Linh Caroline Valverde and Professor Wei Ming Dariotis utilized several examples
including Amy Block Joy and Rosalie Tung, to point out the long-term failure of
the academic system. They criticized the unfair treatment to Asian American
female scholars and also mention that “the system is not designed in anyway to
protect the merit or accomplishments of individuals; the system is just
designed to protect itself” I personally love how they use the metaphor of Star
Wars plot to indicate that the fight for rights in academia is similar. This
reading gives a strong message and encourages people to speak out. Undoubtedly,
most people, especially those who are living in more conservative countries,
must understand the cost of speaking out. I have heard many stories that someone
who speak out eventually face serious personal danger. However, there is also
cost of not speaking out. If we meet something unfair but keep silence, this
problem will extend and harm our offspring one day. In addition, the deeply rooted
grudge may also lead to psychological problems. Therefore, I agree that we
should be more active to speak out our mind, not only for protecting ourselves,
but also everyone in the society. My question for this week is what would be
the most effective way for us to speak out?
