Week 10
This week's piece, "The Time to Fight is Now': When Asian American Women in Academia Go Rogue," by Kieu-Linh Caroline Valverde and Wei Ming Dariotis, discusses the current state of Asian American women in the world of academia. Specifically, it is a preface to an anthology of work that highlights and displays the atrocities that are problematic to the growth of the careers of Asian American women. By incorporating Star Wars references, this is a call to action for Asian American women, amongst others, to stand up and fight for their position.
The future of the world of academia grows more and more uncertain each passing day. And, that may be a good thing. Before, we'd have these oppressive structures that could and would hurt anybody within. However, as more and more people grow more willing to fight, these structures may be at risk of coming down. More people are becoming aware of what is going on within the universities, and why would they stay complacent? Despite their vulnerability, Asian American women are fighting the structures laid forth below them, as demonstrated with this anthology of work. And, this may be a catalyst for more progressive work to be done in the future.
Question: What would it take to pull a complete overhaul of the structures within academia?
