Section A01
This last week's reading is almost an intro to the collections that we've heard over the course of the last quarter. It brings up "Fight the Tower", Professor Valverde's fight for tenure during her physical and mental illnesses. It also brings up the cases of Dariotis and Tung. Asian American Women face two challenges in the status quo of today's America: they are Asian, and they are Women. If there is anything that I have learned this quarter, it is that power, action, and voice are required if one wants to bring up change. Being a woman, as we know it, carries out an underlying subordination, and being Asian forces these women into a position of obedience and unwillingness to speak up. However, the pillars of strength that have fought for their right to stay in the academia, serve as an example to all young Asian American women that there is indeed a place in this society for their successes. There is a difference between what is, and what should be, and the matter is in our hands to bridge these two together and get from A to B. The article cites that "power is supportive rather than judgmental." I personally believe that this is true. Power does not insinuate having one being greater than the other, rather it is uplifting someone and recognizing their value.
Attached is a still from the Disney film Mulan, as a child I was always inspired by this film, and the voice behind Mulan (Lea Salonga). This is feminism at the basic level, but also a great example of how women can put up a fight.
My question is: how long before women don't have to put up the fight to be given the same treatment?
