- What is your SAPSA about?
- Our SAPSA is about political correctness, its historical background, reasons behind it, and issues with and surrounding it. As PC culture has recently become a controversial subject and fueled a heated debate between conservatives and liberals, we sought to view the issue from the outside.
- Who is your intended audience?
- Our intended audience were people that were either for or against political correctness, as well as the uninformed that did not know what political correctness is or how it affects people, as well as its recent controversy.
- Did you accomplish what you set out to do?
- We set out to cover the views from both pro-PC and anti-PC culture and give a unbiased analysis of the two. We proceeded to do this by thoroughly researching figures from both sides and using a different types of media to display their messages. We were able able to accomplish what we wanted, to produce a video that was able to give adequate information and perspectives on the topic of political correctness.
- What were the challenges?
- We faced challenges in securing interviews. There were also scheduling conflicts among group members that prevented all members from attending the interviews. We also had trouble discerning which side of the spectrum people were on according to their opinions on political correctness. As a result, we were unable to find candidates that were solely “for” PCness.
- What would you have done differently?
- Looking back, we could have planned the video better to be able to be succinct and contain the necessary information in a limited amount of time. Also, we could further explore the impacts that political correctness has on Asians and Asian-Americans in particular. We could also take a look at the less-talked about aspects of political correctness (co-opting, etc), as the ones most talked about are its effects on freedom of speech.
- What is the future of your SAPSA?
- Hopefully, our SAPSA will be able to start a more nuanced conversation on the effects of political correctness on academic freedom, and not just the broader idea of “freedom of speech”. Our video was a broad overview on the idea of political correctness and opposing views on the subject; perhaps in the future this debate can become narrower and specific on the subject of academic freedom.
