Week 10 - Robert

A02

In “The Time to Fight is Now” Professor Valverde talks about the struggles of Asian American Women in academia. This article really ties close with the first article assigned to us that talked about Valverde's personal story regarding academia. The article mentioned how Asian American Women are falsely positioned between dominant and minority positions as the idealized worker, and are quickly evicted when those stereotypes are not met. This is very restricting in academia because it leaves almost no rooms for mistakes, and this disadvantage creates a lot of struggle for Asian Americans striving for this field. During high school, I had an Asian American teacher who was in graduate school and she opened to the class about her personal hardships in academia because of her ethnicity. Not only do Asian American Women struggle in academia because of their ethnicity, they suffer from discriminations because of their gender as well - which results in multiple factors of oppression.

Question: In the article, Valverde mentioned that Asian American women function as the  “phantom peril” in the university. Why is this specific phrased used?
