Rachel Wong - Week 10

Rachel Wong
ASA 2 A02
Week 10

This week's reading, "The Time to Fight is Now: When Asian American Women in Academia Go Rogue" by Caroline Valverde and Wei Ming Dariotis, ties together the various themes that were discussed throughout the quarter. The article discusses how Asian American women are at the bottom of the academia hierarchy and are especially discriminated against, because of the assumption that they are the "model minority." They are set at a disadvantaged position in the academic world, which makes it more difficult for them to attain tenure, as discussed in the week 1 reading. I remember, during the beginning of the year, hearing Prof. Valverde tell about her struggles as an Asian-American women trying to attain tenure, and the many obstacles that she had to face, despite her qualifications as a substantial professor.

Being an Asian-American woman myself, it is extremely unfortunate to admit that Asian American women have that reputation against them and the only solution to end or at least aim to change these perceptions is through speaking out, as the article discusses. This is why I believe that this class has been extremely eye-opening for me and is important, because many of the readings and discussions brought up topics and ideas that were meant to be unspoken and hidden from students. Also, the revealing of these ideas encourages all students to learn to speak out.

Question:
Will Asian-American women always be viewed as the "model minority?" Or will society eventually learn to change their perceptions?
