[1D] Final: [Asian Fashionistas]

Group members: Natrine Cheuk, Annie Dang Emily Trang, Ju Kim
Section: A01

Our SAPSA is about exposing Asian American influence in the fashion world. This SAPSA is here to show the many times that Asian American women have come out to influence individuals into assimilating their looks to those of famous Asian fashionistas. Asian American public figures or fashion leaders have the ability to be different and create new ideas to interest young individuals to follow them.

The intended audiences are for young individuals who also are not confident enough to start there own fashion trends. The audience is also for those people who think that Asian Americans do not influence the fashion world. For the most part, young individuals who look for role models can see this video and not be so insecure of the way they dress. By spreading awareness that Asian Americans are the current top trend setters in the fashion world will give confidence and inspiration to Asian Americans who are stereotyped as nerdy and demure.

We definitely accomplished what we set out to do. We exposed Asian Americans as not just being people who are “naturally smart” or “all about books”. Instead, we exposed their influence to something that people may not think Asians impact as much, which is fashion. We were also able to portray Asians in a good light and remove them from negative stereotyping. We created a new positive stereotype that Asian Americans know how to look good and be confident.

Some challenges that will lie ahead is the fact that people may not agree with the information that we provided for them. There will always be mixed opinions about who dresses better since fashion is a very subjective topic. It is also hard to convince people who are stubborn and close-minded. Other challenges are if people choose to bring up failures of Asian American influence in the fashion world.

If we could have done something differently, we would have added more information in the video about the background context of how Asian Americans have started a career of posting pictures of yourselves online. There is a lot of information about Asians in the fashion industry and our video would have been longer if we added that information in.

Hopefully, the future of our SAPSA project is exposure to many people around social media. This will bring out new Asian American individuals who will influence other things besides fashion. We want to break the negative stereotype of Asian Americans that social media portrays. We also want other people to do something about the negative stereotypes of Asian Americans and start a movement of their own. Asian Americans deserve more credit than they are labeled for and more awareness should be spread.
