Week 10 Jocelyn Centeno A02

Week 10 Jocelyn Centeno A02

The reading this week reminded me of the class that we were discussing whether anger should or should not be the driving force of a movement. The part in the reading that talks about anger is explaining that anger is associated with being intellectual. An angry person is considered to be “black” and a calm and collected person is seen as “white”. As Asian Americans we represent the “overachiever” persona, so what does that make us? A reserved and quiet race that let people step all over us. At least that is what the stereotype describes. In this part of the reading the Lordian Anger Theory is brought up why anger is such an important and valid response to racism and sexism. I agree with this theory because why shouldn’t people feel angry for the oppression and unfairness that occurs because of the color of your skin or what gender you identify with? Anger allows us to collectively say “this isn’t right we need change.” Anger is what we feel when people are being mistreated and wronged for an aspect of their life they cannot change. Anger is what these women of color displayed when they established the Fight the Tower movement because of the injustice they faced from the corporate university.

Question: What are Asian Americans if we are no longer the “overachievers” when we rise up and become angry?
