Week 10

Week 10

This week's reading, "The Time to Fight is Now": When Asian American Women in Academia Go Rogue is an anthology of several stories, experiences, and analyses regarding the somewhat unknown struggle of Asian Americans in Academia. This reading harks back to the first week's reading where we see not only the experiences of our professor, Professor Valverde, we also see the experiences of Asian Americans, from students to professors, and their struggles they face in the academe. This reading gives a more wholesome view of the struggle; not only do we see multiple narratives, we see in depth analyses and more importantly a call to action. The one thing that stood out to me while reading this article was how it was written. Ultimately, I believe that this article should be read by people of our generation and background, that is, millennials. It is these people that is the "Future of Higher Education." The article is written in a way that is appealing and humorous, however, not straying too far away from a serious tone. This strategy perfectly allows the information conveyed to be absorbed by its audience, therefore, increasing the likelihood of action. This article is intentionally not boring, instead it uses pop culture references and language that gives the article levity on a topic that is dark and controversial. This, I believe, is necessary when one wants to raise awareness and instill action in the readers.

Question: What are other strategies to increase activist behaviors and progressive behaviors in University students?
