Week 10
Maximilian Probstel
ASA 002 Section A03

In this weeks reading Professor Valverde’s article written together with Wei Ming Dariotis; “The Time to Fight is Now”: When Asian American Women in Academia Go Rogue highlights the importance of asian-american women in an academic environment. This article continues by explaining the necessity for asian-american women to, stand up to hostile environment faced in academia, rather than stay quiet. This is important because asian-american women are sometimes targets of ignorance even by other minority groups. This can be seen when Professor Valverde was the target in a place of high academia such as in her department of Asian-American studies at University level. In Wie Ming Dariotis’s example, after having worked and dedicated years to her work, when she then awaited tenure and was denied and asked for the reason of getting denied it slowly turned out to be a situation where she was the victim of again, a hostile environment. Now in today’s time, equality among all people is a major factor for a progressive society. it is important to respect and treat all people as equal especially in professional work environments. This led me to my question of: “Asian-american females being victimised in the workplace can be something of regular occurrence, what kind of strategies on a day-to-day basis can asian-american females follow for this to stop?”

I decided to add Amy Blockjoy’s story since this was an example of a positive outcome after standing up to harassment in the work place.
