1B Final SAPSA: How Are We Different? Asian Americans v.s. Asian International Students

SAPSA Final
Group 1B:

1. What is your SAPSA about?
Our group is looking forward to finding out how students of the same ethnicity but with different backgrounds view each other. Therefore, we are interviewing both Asian Americans, who were born and raised or have spent most of their lives in the U.S., and international Asian students about their impressions on each other. We believe that cultural background will extensively affect one's value and personality, even if they have the same ethnicity. And these diverse personalities and values can easily cause misconceptions on both groups. We are hoping to share some common stereotypes, and eliminate the misunderstanding that both groups have towards each other.

2. Who is your intended audience?
Our intended audience is Asian American students and Asian International students at UC Davis. Although people share the same ethnicity, they are "separated" from each other due to the different environments they were exposed to while growing up, creating misunderstandings between them. This kind of misunderstanding happens mainly because people do not have opportunities for direct communication, so they judge others by stereotypes. As a result, our group is hoping to break misunderstandings at UC Davis, especially between students of the same ethnicity because it is interesting to see how people of the same ethnicity have different perspectives.

3. Did you accomplish what you set out to do?
We planned to interview 4 groups of students of the ethnicity but with different backgrounds. However, we found out that the video would be too long, therefore we only interviewed 2 groups eventually.

4. What were the challenges?
The challenges would be reaching out to interviewees. We sent lots of emails to several student association but did not receive any reply. As a result, we had to reach out to our friends' friends in order to finish this project.

5. What would you have done differently?
We would have included more solutions to the problem than simply depicting the problems. In addition, we should have chose a better place for interviews since right now, some of the audios are difficult to listen.

6. What is the future of your SAPSA?
Hopefully, our SAPSA can arouse people's attention on the misconception between Asian Americans students and Asian International students. In today's world, there are so many conflicts between ethnicities. Since Asian Americans and Asian are of the same ethnicity, we think that they should build up a close relationship.
