Week 10: The Future of Higher Education

This week's reading, "The Time to Fight is Now": When Asian American Women in Academia Go Rogue, reiterates the past themes of this course, relating the struggles of Asian Americans, especially women, in the academy to not only institutional racism and the model minority myth, but the corporatization and imperialism of the university. One thing that stuck out to me was the case of Rosalie Tung, who had won a 1990 Supreme Court case in which the court decided that "the university's need for 'confidentiality' did not override issues of racism and sexism in employment". The court case itself did not resonate with me so much as the reaction (or lack of reaction) did. I think that this is just a prime example in many of the way the media plays a prominent role in contributing to the model minority stereotype. In keeping decisive court cases such as this one, which literally altered the tenure process across the nation and helped every tenured and tenure-track member in the United States, unpublicized, the media implicitly suggests that Asian Americans are quiet and disciplined, and that they do not speak out or fight against issues that affect them. This introduction to the anthology speaks to the contemporary issues that Asian Americans are facing in academia, and overall is a call to action to garner awareness and support for the Fight the Tower movement. I do believe that this piece is extremely inspirational, as it draws upon my own experiences and feelings as an immigrant to the country. At the same time, it leaves me with a sense of hope, that the Asian American woman can stand up for herself and fight for what she believes in.

Question: Since Asian Americans are given such a unique position in American hierarchy, how is it that we can utilize the benefits of this position to help ourselves and other minorities?Image result for asian american university protest
