Week 10

Camille Joy Abutin
Week 10
Section A01

Since reading “Fight the Tower” during week 1 to reading  “The Time to Fight is Now”: When Asian American Women in Academia Go Rogue." now, I feel as though I’m looking at these issues facing women in academe in a new light. I think the compilation of the different readings we have had this quarter has given me more clarity on the different structural barriers in the institution that are preventing women of color in academia from thriving in their work. Things like the corporatization of the university, miseducation of Asian Americans, marginalization, model minority theories, and oppression of student activism to name a few. After reading  “The Time to Fight is Now”: When Asian American Women in Academia Go Rogue,” I kept thinking about past readings this quarter and how it intentional it was that we wee the different facets of oppression in the university in order to understand the difficulty and necessity of fighting the institution that has marginalized our community in academia. The biggest thing I’ve learned since reading this article was how important it is for us to “stay on target” and see the issues holistically while tackling one thing at a time. A common theme throughout this piece was this sense that we have to be organized and together to fight the tower. By listening to one another and responding to each other’s call to action, we can begin to find the cracks of the institution and rebuild from here.

Question: Why is there such little visibility for movements like “Fight the Tower” outside ASA classes?
