Week 1

After reading “Fight the Tower: A Call to Action for Women of Color in Academia”, by Professor Kieu-Linh Caroline Valverde, I was able to see how truly corrupt the academe is. We hear about all the countless students who face bullies, harassment, and dismissal, but to think about grown adults who have matured and are in professional settings being the culprit of these acts towards other adults is absolutely disgusting. We think of Universities to be an educated, safe place for all whether it be students or its’ workers. Yet, women of color, even in such workplace, are being attenuated through discrimination. It amazes me how race can play a part in making a work environment extremely hostile. As Professor Valverde discusses her personal experience through corruption, discrimination, her tenure denial, miscarriage, etc., I was left disheartened and in anger. But seeing her rise through her tenure and regain her strength was definitely inspiring and eye opening. She was able to find people who could support and fight with her and; therefore, beat the unfair university system. Valverde reaches out to women to fight for fair and just treatment. Women are to support one another to survive and thrive in academia.

Question:
Professor Valverde mentioned how she was dead for 90 minutes. How did it feel to be dead? What was it like?
