Katherine Kam’s article, “On Some College Campuses, A Focus On Asian American Mental Health”, discusses the mental health of the Asian community within college universities. Kam discusses the fact that it is not uncommon for students of Asian descent to suffer from mental health issues. The mental state of these students are quickly deteriorating under the pressure of school. The expectation that they must excel academically is placed upon Asian students by family, society, and themselves. The article then goes to talk about the available resources for Asian students that feel as if they are struggling mentally. These resources include facilities and programs that allow Asian students to talk about their problems in a safe environment. Reading about these resources made me question how our university approaches mental health. Although there is not a program geared specifically towards Asian students here at UC Davis, there are still many places to go in regards to mental health. After reading this article, I do wish that the university would implement a program for Asian students to talk about their mental health. As the article mentions, things such as therapy are not often accepted in Asian culture. I I believe that having a program that allows Asian students to discuss their mental health in a safe and comfortable environment would be beneficial to such students.
Question: Do you feel that the university provides students with helpful resources for students who are struggling with their mental health?
