The article "The Imperial University" reflects on many of our current and past social issues that emerged since the early 2000s. All of us went through the era of terror, speculation, and accusation that came after the 9/11. "In a post 9/11 world, the U.S. university has become a particularly charged site for debates about nationalism, patriotism, citizenship, and democracy. The “crisis” of academic freedom emerges from events such as the ones we witnessed in Riverside and Davis but also in many other campuses where administrative policing flexes its muscles along with the batons, chemical weapons, and riot gear of police and SWAT teams and where containment and censorship of political critique is enacted through the collusion of the university, partisan off-campus groups and networks, and the state." This post-9/11 issue reminds me the Israel government's implementation of a controversial security measures at a sensitive Muslim holy site in Jerusalem just two days after three gunmen killed police officers there. The new security measure included metal detector, and checkpoints prior to the holy site entry. However, since the holy site is a precious flash point for both the Jewish and Muslim worshipers, many Muslim countries condemned Israel's behavior on making Muslims as the target of new security measures. Some "The incident of shooting did no good to us, neither the Jewish nor us."- said Muslim worshiper whose entry was denied. The aftermath of this incident gave Israel government the chance to take advantage the situation. They allowed Jewish worshipers to have full access while only granting access to in-town Muslim worshipers. Likewise in the post 9/11 United States, many of the Muslim students who have had the opportunity to go to school here are always under government surveillance. Fast-forward to our current administration, President has brought this type of "imperial" act to a national measure. He banned entry from several targeted Muslim countries.
Questions:
Are all these suppressing imperial behaviors from the higher power (school administration/government) all originated from bad intentions? Or a necessity to protect the people and to keep the order?
