In the article “Kaozong Mouvangsou’s “Hmong Does Not Mean Free: The Miseducation
of Hmong Americans,” Kaozong
Hmong examines the flaws in the U.S educational system, specifically how the
educational system allows our society to ignore many culturally diverse groups
in our Asian-American community, and eventually foster the division within the
Asian American society. In the U.S history book, Hmong people are usually
categorized as one of the bigger Asian ethnicities such as Chinese, Vietnamese,
or Laos. However, Hmong people have their unique language, culture, history and
belief. The failures of the American educational system in relationship to
Hmong create a complicated and awkward position for Hmong people in our
society, where they’re not recognized, heard, and supported. The educational
system unintentionally helps our society to divide each other that ultimately
hurt our chances to succeed as immigrants, or minorities. This reading allows
me to realize how blessed I am as an Asian American who never experienced
culture or social discrimination inside my own Asian community. Since I had the
opportunity to study Chinese history in Taiwan, this reading reminds me of the
history of Chinese Hui people that reside in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region
(NHAR). The Hui people believe in Islam, and they are a legally religious group
located in Northwest of China. Hui people have a substantial history that is
often ignored in the Chinese educational system. However, their history could
be examined to explain the very first interaction between east Asia and the
middle east, where Islam was originated.
Question:
Is there any way to
propose to add a section for Hmong people's history in the US History or World
History book?
