Week 1: Megan Tang

Megan Tang
Week 1
A02

The reading for week 1 really resonated with me.  Valverde describes the location that she is in as a "tower." And, in this tower, there in discrimination that I have never really thought about. It really made me think outside of the box and understand what was happening in our society. For example, the word target was used to describe the victim spotted and bullied. It made me think of how the situation is like an actual target for archery. In a sense, people seem to be very narrow minded and only have one common goal in mind - to "hit the target." The closer you hit the target, the closer you are to winning the game. People often times wants to attack the victim since it makes them feel more accomplished and the bigger and better person. However, in my opinion, I believe that this segregation in our society is very unprofessional and unnecessary. What do you win when you play this game? The only thing you win is a title - the bully. In addition, these bullies cause a toll on many people's mental health. Physical health is not the only thing that should be reflected on. The majority of the API community will not seek for professional help since mental health is considered a stigma. The pressure of living in the "tower" and the social pyramid plays such a significant role in our society.

Question: I understand we have rights as students and employers. But, has the university system really helped students and employers who have struggled?
