When reading Waking by Wang Ping, I was struck by a sense of familiarity. That is to say, I have heard many horror stories on colleagues backstabbing each other for their own gain. The imagery that Wang Ping uses to describe the act of betrayal was new however and paints the act as something visceral and brutal. As I've never been on the receiving end of such deception, I wasn't familiar with how something like this would feel, but her description made it relatable. Furthermore, the poem had a very revolutionary feel to it. In relation to screen printing and the reading itself, it reminded me of many types of revolutionary posters that I had previously seen.
For example, it reminds me of this one poster discussed in a history class in high school. Here, during 1968, various groups worked on changing radical establishments in a dingy basement via screen printing posters. An example is seen below:
