The article How to leave Academia mainly talks about the author, after leaving one after another universities, she started working in a restaurant to be a waitress. I am deeply impressed by the part she firstly worked in the restaurant. She was arrogant before being a waitress. From her words, I could feel, in her deep thoughts, that she thought being a waitress was humble and she was ashamed to be a waitress with a PHD and teaching experience in top universities. I could understand why she felt that and I won't judge her about her thoughts. After she worked longer in that restaurant, she found her coworkers brilliant and perfectly handled their own job. Mostly importantly, she felt warmth and empathy and felt like being in a family, which was the feeling she never had in academia. Another article, Opening the box international scholar talks about difficulty, as an international scholar, she suffered. Her story reminds me of a story just happened around me. A Chinese ECN professor was dismissed because she was reported by a student since she used past exams as samples which were similar to the exam. I told this to my classmates and then added it in presentation. They were all surprised and said this was unfair. As an international student and also an Asian, I know I will have a long road to complete to get fairly treated.
Question: How to improve the situation of people of color in academia.
