Amay Kharbanda Week 5 SS1

"Mothering is Liberation" by Allyson Tintiangco talks about the difficulties in being a mother and a professor but having the most positive impact being both. The idea of being a mother and a professor did not coexist in the minds of her friends and colleagues and is considered unprofessional. She accounts for her struggles with microaggressions in the workplace by her colleagues and students alike. She was told she did not have the appearance of a professor which did not sit well with her as she worked hard to become one. But her perspective is completely different. She feels that taking care of a child and being a professor have similar roles. Both require teaching on how to think critically and liberation from oppressive ideas that young people can have. She shows the different ways motherhood and academia go hand in hand.

I fully support her ideas as I can definitely relate to it. One of my high school teachers, who I looked up to very much, always considered her students like her own children. She would provide guidance and create an environment that encouraged us to think outside our thinking patterns. She was very supportive of her students' efforts and was very positive about how she treated us.

My question: How do you spread this idea to women in a society that the choice between motherhood and their profession need not be separated?
