The article titled “Fight the Tower: A Call to Action for Women of Color in Academia” by Valverde tackle the issues of inequality by highlighting the plight of women of color in academia. Using her own life experience Valverde has been able to effectively outline the plight of women of color in academia as well as propose measures that can be pursued to change this situation. Her use of the rhetorical tool of ethos and pathos have been effective in convincing her readers that there is need for change. As a woman of color in academia, she possesses the knowledge and experience that makes her a reliable voice in tackling the inequality issue that has kept majority of women of color in low income sectors of academia and hindering their entrance as well as growth in academia. Readers can relate to assertion through her use of her own experience in showing the harm that inequality in academia is causing women of color. Her close to death experience has triggered a feeling of empathy amongst her reader in a manner that can encourage them to take action against inequality in academia. Valverde’s use of logos has also been exceptional. In making claims about women of color being targets of bullying, mobbing, harassment, disability and parenthood, the author has made a point of backing her arguments with facts. She is not just stating things, but using facts such as real-life experiences and data to convince readers that her arguments are founded. Despite her outstanding use of rhetorical tools in making arguments, her paper does not follow the standard format of a research paper as it is lacking a literature review section, a methodology section and an abstract. Abstract is key in informing a reader of the content of the paper, literature review enlightens readers on the status of the theory being explored and methodology shows how the author arrived at her arguments.
Question: What can she/us do to improve her situation?
