The poem that we discussed in class called “Waking” by W.P. brought up important concepts about discrimination towards minorities in academia. This poem specifically explains an experience that the author had where she compared herself to a mouse that was thrown across the room. She explains that just like the mouse being thrown, she was thrown aside as well. Moreover, she further explains at the end of the poem that no matter what ethnicity or race you are, you can offer the same “delicious meals” and the same “beautiful sonnets,” as said in the poem. It is sad that even after years of education and hard work, professors and even biologists are constantly discriminated against. I cannot imagine working so hard and accomplishing so much just to be looked down upon again just because we are the “model minority.”
Question: Has there been similar cases to the situation in “Waking” that have happened at UC Davis?
